As you might’ve noticed, I bailed on Geneseo. I have grappled with feelings of depression every year I’ve been a college student, but after this past spring break I found myself lower than ever before more […]

This semester has been one of my rougher ones. For four consecutive weeks, I’ve driven home across the state to escape the depressed emotions of apathy, alienation, and loneliness which tend to encompass my days […]

I’ve written a lot of (my) good stuff around 3am. As I writer I’ve always savored absolute quiet, and since I’ve been living with a rowdy group of young lads for the past year and a half, 3am has been almost the […]

Over this past summer, and the semester prior, I think it’d be safe for me to say I was in something of a depression. Spring semester of last year, my sophomore year, I came to believe that my friends weren’t […]

Rachel, I heavily identify with your newfound writer’s block and accompanying anxieties, I felt much the same about returning to poetry this semester. The only thing which saved me for the whirlwind this past week […]

I’ll confess; in a prioritized list of all the things which swirl in my mind as I compose poetic lines, sonic qualities are typically near the bottom. It’s not that I believe there is no value to sound in poetry, which would undoubtedly be a form of blasphemy, it’s more just a product of the way my writing brain works and exists. Semantics are my…[Read more]

Greetings blog, it’s been awhile. A couple weeks ago in a class discussion I’d remarked upon how I’m always writing poetic moments from memory, sitting alone at my desk in a quiet, usually dark room. Clearly this created a lot of wistful, if not depressed content. I’d said it was because all the things I loved doing were very active, such as…[Read more]

After reading this post I couldn’t help but to cmd+t and go through everyone’s writing exercises myself… As I did, I found myself wishing for a way to easily comment, but of course I don’t know how easy that […]

As I drove the monotonous three-hour stretch of I-90 between Albany and Rochester on my way back to school this past Monday, my mind was swirling. I’d just had a whirlwind of a break at home during which I’d spent only a single night in my own bed, among visits to a friend’s college and another friend’s lake house. I’d departed home in the…[Read more]

Hey Meg, I think you’re touching on some really great stuff here! Your thoughts are also quite well organized and easy to digest, which definitely helped. Reading through the way you’ve broken down this issue of […]

Alberto Ríos’ piece from “A Broken Thing” brought home its most important point to me with its fifth section, which discusses complete written lines as useful measurements of one’s “intellectual unit” or, simply […]

I’ve just read about the controversy surrounding Lena Dunham’s essay collection, “Not That Kind of Girl” which was released in fall of 2014. To outline, Dunham had written in great detail about the personality characteristics and appearance of an assailant in an alleged college sexual assault, named Barry. She wrote of him as Oberlin’s “resident…

Noah Coates edited the blog post Departing Concretes for Abstract in the group

One thing I have been grappling with here in Iceland is the appropriate use of abstract reflections. In a landscape as dramatic and uniquely beautiful as this, I feel it is very easy to write strictly in terms of concretes. What there is to see, what has happened, etc. The landscape itself practically begs to be written about.
However, mi…[Read more]
