Brittany Pratt replied to the topic Gender in Children of Men in the forum Film Talk 5 years, 4 months ago
I also found myself thinking a lot about gender watching Children of Men. In regards to our hero being male in the film, I agree that making the hero a woman would entirely change the reception. Personally, I think it would have been more powerful to woman in the hero role and it would have felt a little less like there was this male savior…[Read more]

Brittany Pratt replied to the topic Does "The Station Agent" Have a Plot? What About a Hero? in the forum Film Talk 5 years, 4 months ago
I think the discrepancy comes from the definition of plot. By your definition, Nicholas, then yes, I’d say The Station Agent is a film with a plot. Brittany Pratt replied to the topic The Female Gaze? in the forum Film Talk 5 years, 6 months ago
Even though I think Magic Mike would be an excellent example of the “female gaze,” it can’t be because the female gaze doesn’t exist. It can’t exist. Yes, that movie, and increasingly others (as more women enter the film industry), are geared toward female audiences and arguably “objectify” men (though, not in the same way as women), but there i…[Read more]

Brittany Pratt started the topic Hero's Passion in the forum Film Talk 5 years, 7 months ago
Often when we think of heroes, one of the first things we picture is their insurmountable passion for their cause, the same one we, the viewers, rally behind alongside them. In Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca, however, the setting and our hero, Richard (Rick) Blaine, are defined by their efforts to remain neutral.
Technically, Casablanca, b…[Read more]
