William Antonelli commented on the post, sung lyrics vs written poetry, on the site The Contemporary Poem 5 years, 11 months ago
I’ve always appreciated the band Yellowcard’s habit of making their first chorus different from their other choruses, usually through the method of adding additional lines as the song goes on. Consider “Ocean […]

I still visit this blog occasionally, even though I’m out of workshop, so don’t be too put off by my commenting.
I know a lot of writers, both professional and amateur, but I can’t say that I know many who […]

Poets! Use moons in your poems! Use birds & flowers & oceans! Don’t trust anyone who says “Poetry has had enough of these things.” Because what they’re actually saying is “I have had enough of these things.” & how could anyone who’s “had enough of the moon” be right about poetry?

William Antonelli edited the blog post Titles Are Hard—But We Can Make Them Easier in the group The Contemporary Poem: 6 years, 3 months ago
Over the past few years, I’ve participated and had my work critiqued in countless writing workshops, each one varying in both content and usefulness. After all, there’s only so much that university students, most of them amateur or beginning writers, can comment on in half an hour. Yet, if there’s one thing that’s been constant in every workshop…[Read more]

William Antonelli commented on the post, someone had to ask the question, on the site The Contemporary Poem 6 years, 3 months ago
Honestly, I just go for the poems that I think will make an interesting workshop—does something unique, has enough meat to get a conversation going, is enjoyable to read. If I’m gonna be subjecting a class to my d […]

William Antonelli commented on the post, This Blog is Problematic, on the site The Contemporary Poem 6 years, 4 months ago
“I think, in essence, the backlash these artists are getting is important because it starts a conversation. Someone is always going to be mad at a form of art that is created because it isn’t doing enough or t […]

William Antonelli commented on the post, line break (up), on the site The Contemporary Poem 6 years, 4 months ago
I like Olivia’s suggestion. Keep digital copies, but burn any physical ones. It’ll be badass.
I wish I could offer my own advice, but I’m struggling with the same thing right now.

I’ve been thinking about this for three months now, and when we had the conversation in class about Sorbello’s transphobia, thought of it again.
To spare you the entire tweet thread, queer historian Morgan […]

William Antonelli commented on the post, How do you define a poem?, on the site The Contemporary Poem 6 years, 4 months ago
I’ve always gone by the idea that poetry has no rules. IMO, to say something “isn’t poetry” is very similar to saying something “isn’t art”–it’s an act of elitism

Same way you do it in prose—switch up your pacing with punctuation and sentence/paragraph structure, and give us a narrative we care about.

Who was the dude who burned all the work he had written before age 27? He’d probably have something to say about this.
I, personally, always think of the quote from animator Max Gilardi:
“How I draw now is how […] -

Why is everyone on this blog always starting their comments with “Hey [author of post],” or “Hi [author of post]!”??? It gives every comment such a stilted and formal vibe, like we’re baby boomers on Facebook replying to a Happy Birthday from our second cousins. Why do we do it? Because we wanna buffer our scathing comments with polite…[Read more]

I’m not surprised, considering there are no line breaks in prose poetry. 😛When reading poetry, I’m not sure it’s a good idea t […]

In my view, there are few conversations about art more useless than “Is this piece of writing literature?” (perhaps just next to “What is art?”) The debate about whether something is literature–a word that has no […]
